Book Trust envisions a world where literacy removes barriers and provides all children with the tools to navigate life successfully. To facilitate this, Book Trust uniquely delivers choice and ownership of books to children from low-income families, increasing their literacy skills and fostering life-long learning. Their story began in 2001, when Adrienne Schatz founded Book Trust in Colorado to help students gain access to books and develop a love of reading by providing students with money to select and purchase books. Adrienne attended a mixed income elementary school as a child and noticed that not all students ordered books from Scholastic. She thought they just didn’t like to read as much as she did, but discovered later on that it was because their families couldn’t afford to purchase books. After this realization, she developed the vision for Book Trust: to inspire kids’ passion for reading by allowing children from low-income families to choose and take home their very own books. Book Trust has grown from serving 170 students in Colorado in 2001 to 53,000 children in 21 states during the 2017-2018 academic year. Since our inception in 2001, Book Trust students have become the proud owners of more than 6.3 million books!
